This syllabus is planned for 5 days, held around late April – early May (flowering season):

Day I
9-10 Evolution of Triticineae and taxonomy of the different species. (1 hr) E. Millet Lecture
10-11 Introduction to cereal rusts. (1 hr) Y. Anikster Lecture + demonstration
11-13 Morphology and ecology of Aegilops species and genetic relationships between them. (2 hr) E. Millet Lecture + demonstration
13-14 Lunch
14-16 The use of wild emmer wheat for domesticated wheat improvement. (2 hr) A. Distelfeld Lecture
16-17 Exploitation of wild relatives for wheat improvement:
a. Exploitable traits from wild cereals (0.5 hr).
b. The gene pools of wheat. (0.5 hr) E. Millet Lecture

Day II – Field tour (Aegilops)
A trip along the coastal plain to see Aegilops populations and to see the problem of urbanization. It will include: Ae. sharonensis population in Shfayim and in Hadera, Ae. longissima population in Horbat Alon, Ae. speltoides population in Ramat Hanadiv nature reserve.

Day III
9-10 The life cycle of major cereal rusts. (1 hr) Y. Anikster Lecture
10-12 Exhibition (stages of the life cycle) and laboratory work: inoculation of main host from alternate host. (2 hr) Y. Anikster demonstration + lab work
12-13 Resistance of Aegilops spp. to cereal rusts.
(1 hr) J. Manisterski laboratory demonstration
13-14 Lunch
14-15 Plant-pathogen ecosystems in Israel. Diseases of cereal crops wild relatives, alternate hosts and variability in resistance. (1 hr) J. Manisterski Lecture
15-17 Methods of gene transfer from wild relatives to wheat including chromosome engineering. (2 hr) E. Millet Lecture + demonstration

Day IV – Field tour (wheat and rusts)
Natural habitats of wild emmer wheat, wild barely and wild oats. It will include: Ramot Menashe wild emmer population, Ammiad nature reserve, Almagor, Miztpor Beit Tzeida and Dalyiot junction. The trip will include exploring cereal rusts and their secondary hosts.

Day V
9-11 Genetic mapping using populations based on crosses with wild emmer wheat. (2 hr) A. Distelfeld Lecture
11-12 Estimating genetic diversity and association mapping in wild populations. (1 hr) H. Sela. Lecture
12-13 Marker assisted selection (hands on using molecular markers techniques for genotyping and selection – the idea is to genotype near-isogenic lines for rust resistance and to phenotype the plants). (1 hr) A. Distelfeld Lecture + demonstration
13-14 Lunch
14-15 Gene banks of wild relatives. (1 hr) H. Sela Lecture
15-16 Case study – use of Sharon goatgrass for breeding of rust resistant wheat (stem rust Ug99, leaf rust and stripe rust). (1 hr) E. Millet Lecture
