In this course we will address selected topics in the forefront of membrane biology. The interest in biomembranes is interdisciplinary, combining biophysics, cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, bioinformatics and system biology. In addition to the theoretical and experimental aspects of biomembranes, they are the fascinating border between the living cell and organism and its non-living environment.
Selected topics (may change according to the group of teachers):
Structure and function of membranes and methods to study them.
Composition and properties of micelles, liposomes and biological membranes. Fluidity and permeability of the phospholipid bilayer. Movement of molecules across biological membranes. Active and passive transport. Transporters, ion channels, ionophores. Interaction of proteins with the bilayer. Purification, structure and function of respiratory chain enzymes and ATPase.
Translocation of proteins across membranes and insertion of membrane proteins.
The focus will be translocation across ensdoplasmic reticulum (ER) in eukaryotes and translocation across mitochondrial membranes: with emphasis on the role of chaperones. The role of Hsp70 chaperones upon protein translocation and their mechanism of function will be discussed.
