The purpose of the course is to prepare students for working with the zebrafish and utilizing this model in their current and future biomedical research. The course will cover the history of the field, genetic and imaging methodologies, bioinformatics and use of zfin and other related resources. Students will become knowledgeable about fish husbandry and the guidelines and instructions regarding fish welfare and will gain hands-on experience in handling, crossing, screening and microscopy.

A major part of the course will be dedicated to examples for the utilization of the zebrafish as a disease model: zebrafish as a model for neurodegenerative diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders, circadian clock and sleep disorders, eating disorders, zebrafish as a model for neuroendocrine systems development and function and endocrine disorders, metabolic diseases, vascular and lymphatic disorders, zebrafish as a model for cancer, and the use of zebrafish in drug discovery. The exact subject will change from one year to another depending on developments in the field.

This year the course will be mutually delivered in English by Prof. Francesco Argenton, a visiting Prof. from Padova University and Prof. Yoav Gothilf.  It will be delivered May 18-Jun 23, and will be given on Mondays and Tuesdays 17:00-19:00.

Final grade will be based on a written seminar in the form of a short research proposal.
